Libya mulls next phase of coastal railway

THE LIBYAN government is reportedly assessing a feasibility study for the next phase of it’s ambitious plan to link Egypt and Tunisia with a railway running the entire length of the country’s Mediterranean coast.

MEED reported last month that the study by Dorsch, Germany, outlines alignment options ranging from 440 km. to 480 km. for the section from Benghazi to Tobruk in northeast Libya. Dorsch is also believed to be studying the 150 km. stretch between Tobruk and the Egyptian border near El Sallomi.

Russian Railways (RZD) is currently building the 551 km. Benghaze – Surt line, while China Railway Construction Company (CRCC) has the contract for the 352 km. Surt – Al Khums stretch.

Demonstration runs are now taking place on a completed 5 km. section of the Tripoli – Ras Adjir line, which is being built by CRCC. AnsaldoBreda has supplied a 200 km/h four-car DMU, which is believed to be from the batch of IC4 trains originally destined for Danish State Railways (DSB).
